How this is calculated

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered nonexempt employees must receive at least 1.5 times their regular rate for overtime hours. This page multiplies the regular rate you enter by 1.5×, then multiplies that overtime rate by the overtime hours you enter.

It does not decide which hours qualify as overtime. That depends on weekly totals, daily rules in states like California, union contracts, and job exemptions. Use the overtime calculator when you need to classify hours first.

Results are gross pay before tax. Pair with the paycheck calculator if you want an after-tax view.

Formula

Overtime pay = regular hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours

Numbers and assumptions are documented on our Sources & methodology page.
